Illinois Appellate Court Districts

The First District Appellate Court has 24 justices and is divided into six divisions. It is located in Chicago. The First District Court hears cases appealed from the trial courts in Cook County.

The Second District Appellate Court has 7 justices and is located in Elgin. The Second District Court hears cases appealed from the trial courts of 4 Judicial Circuits in 5 counties: Circuits (Counties) - 16th (Kane), 19th (Lake), 22nd (McHenry), 23rd (DeKalb & Kendall)

The Third District Appellate Court has 7 justices and is located in Ottawa. The Third District Court hears cases appealed from the trial courts of 4 Judicial Circuts in 7 counties: Circuits (Counties): 12th (Will), 13th (Bureau, Grundy & LaSalle), 18th (DuPage), 21st (Iroquois & Kankakee)

The Fourth District Appellate Court has 10 justices and  is located in Springfield. The Fourth District Court hears cases appealed from the trial courts of 8 Judicial Circuits in 41 counties: Circuits (Counties) - 7th (Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Morgan, Sangamon & Scott), 8th (Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Cass, Mason, Menard, Pike & Schuyler), 9th (Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Knox, McDonough & Warren), 10th (Marshall, Peoria, Putnam, Stark & Tazewell), 11th (Ford, Livingston, Logan, McLean & Woodford), 14th (Henry, Mercer, Rock Island & Whiteside), 15th (Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle & Stephenson), 17th (Boone & Winnebago)

The Fifth District Appellate Court has 8 justices and is located in Mt. Vernon. The Fifth District Court hears cases appealed from the trial courts of 8 Judicial Circuits in 48 counties: Circuits (Counties) - 1st (Alexander, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union & Williamson), 2nd (Crawford, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne & White), 3rd (Bond & Madison), 4th (Christian, Clay, Clinton, Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Marion, Montgomery & Shelby), 5th (Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Edgar & Vermilion), 6th (Champaign, DeWitt, Douglas, Macon, Moultrie & Piatt), 20th (St. Clair), 24th (Monroe, Perry, Randolph & Washington)
